Weekend Fancy Foods (1) : Spicy Chilli Crab

Writer's picture: YanWanYanWan

With various seafood cravings, me and my housemates took a 4am trip to Billingsgate Market in Canary Wharf on the weekend.

4 brown crabs for £10!! What a bargain!

Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 chopped onion

  • A handful of dried shrimp

  • 2 cloves of minced garlic

  • 2 tablespoons of sambal chilli

  • 5 tablespoons of tomato ketcup

  • 3-5 bird's eye chillies

  • 3 eggs

  • 2 crabs

  • 1/2 cup of cornstarch water

  • 4 tablespoons of sunflower oil

  • Chopped scallions (for garnish)

Method

  1. Kill and prepare the live crabs :(

  2. Heat a wok and add oil.

  3. Add in the onion, garlic, dried shrimp, chillies and stir-fry until fragrant. Add in sambal chilli, tomato ketchup and 2 cup of water. Let it simmer on medium-low heat. Adjust heat and taste per personal peference.

  4. Add in chopped crabs and cover the wok with a lid. Let it steam for 20-30 minutes. The crabs are done with they change into a red colour but let it simmer and let all sauce coat the crabs!

  5. Add in cornstarch water and eggs.

  6. Remove wok from heat. Serve the spicy chilli crabs garnished with scallions and get ready to dig in and dirty your hands!

It is a lot of work to clean and prepare the live crabs and cut them up to pieces, would recommend using a cleaver but I just used a normal kitchen knife to break my way through.... (It works! Don't be scared, just go for it!)
